Trump shutdown the Carbon Monitoring System
The Trump administration decides to delete a Nasa’s project that supervises greenhouse gas emissions. It’s called Carbon Monitoring System (CMS). According to Science Magazine, who first tells the story of Cms shutdown, Nasa supports different activities through this project: they study carbon contained in forests, the improvement of carbon inventories in tropical forests and even the support of other carbon monitoring efforts.
The 10 million dollars project was employed to control greenhouse gas emissions like carbon and methane and thanks to Cms scientists developed models on emissions’ spreading. According to reserarchers, this shutdown will make impossible to check if countries are reducing greenhouse gas emissions as established in Paris climate deal.
«If you cannot measure emissions reductions, you cannot be confident that countries are adhering to the agreement – said Kelly Sims Gallagher, the director of Tufts University's Center for International Environment and Resource Policy – To kill off Cms is a grave mistake».
Bbc notes how United States’ efforts on climate problems are really in danger with Trump administration, partly because of president’s will to boost the country’s fossil fuel industry. According to the tycoon, climate change is a «hoax».
