The Pope's gifts to Donald Trump are meaningful
On Wednesday, 24 May, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, met with pope Francis.
This meeting was a part of the president's first foreign tour.
The two have a "rocky" past: when asked his thoughts about Trump's statements during the campaign, Pope Francis said: "A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not a Christian". Trump responded by criticizing the pope:" No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man's religion or faith".
The pope sent a clear message with his choice of gifts: he gave to the president his encyclical Laudato Si', a 38,000 word essay on climate change and environment.
This text, written by the pope, is a sweeping call-to-action for world leaders to focus on the need to preserve and care for the environment.
The second present Trump received was a medallion of Peace, with an olive tree on it.
A clear message for the Us leader.
