World Water Day: the chances of NBS

Today 22 march is the World Water Day, which is celebrated every year after a UN decision in 1992. The purpose of this day is to stress on the importance of water for the entire world. This year’s theme is “Nature for Water” which focuses the attention on nature-based solutions to reduce the lack of water in our days. UN’s campaign, “The answer is nature”, aims to aware humanity about NBS (nature-based solutions) such as planting trees or reconnecting rivers to floodplains, in order to create a sustainable and cost-effective way to restore the water cycle and reduce the impact of the lack of water on weather and people. Nbs could also reduce pollution and help the population growth, by a new circular economy with these targets.

Mr. Miroslav Lajčák is the President of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly. Today he launches the International Decade for Action: Water for Sustainable Development. This project wants to improve cooperation in order to give answers to the water problem. During this World Water Day, UN will launch also the World Water Development Report, which is addressed to politicians and rulers. It asked them to adopt green solutions in their countries and in every sector: industry, agriculture, cities and disaster risk reduction.

This year’s World Water Day is to celebrate 25 years of existence. There are many events around the world, but the greatest one will be held at the 8th World Water Forum in Brazil, where UN Environment and UNESCO are organizing the Convention on Biological Diversity.
